Audio Authentication detects tampering or editing and determines if a recording is an accurate representation of the audio events that occurred when the recording device was capturing audio. As digital audio has made audio editing available to almost everyone, Audio Forensics has also advanced with sophisticated software and high-resolution monitors that reveal what has been done to the audio, more than ever before.
Audio Authentication Process:
Forensic Audio Authentication has always consisted of a series of steps to help the examiner discover what is there that should not be there, and prove the absence of what should be there.
Over the years, and the transition from analog to digital, the steps have changed. These steps continue to evolve as new sophisticated high-end Audio Forensics software becomes available.
You May Need Audio Authentication of a Recording if:
- A recording is being used against you in court by another party and you believe it has been altered
- A recording that you want to enter as evidence may be challenged regarding its integrity
- You are given a recording that was the result of an accidental dialing. You hear your voice, but with one or more portions missing or not in the order in which you remember saying them. Even an accidental recording can be tampered with or edited.
- You have a recording that was out of your possession and your want to verify that it has not been edited
- You are given a recording in which you are one of the people talking, but what you hear is not what you remember saying
- You receive a recording with you talking but words you remember saying are not on the recording
- You receive a recording with someone talking about you. When asked, the person denies making the statement(s)
Forensic Audio can be a complex subject to simplify while still giving a thorough presentation of the audio aspects of your case.
You May Need Courtroom Presentation Services When:
- You feel that your case could benefit from a more appealing audio and video-aided presentation of the audio evidence
- Not all of the recording is permitted to be played, with segments that must be covered with a tone or rendered unintelligible to protect a victim, a witness, or for some other reason. Sound Testimony® can do this accurately and tastefully, with or without a video-aided presentation.
Sound Testimony® provides comprehensive analog tape analysis for every format from micro-cassette to reel-to-reel tape. There are instances, particularly with cold cases and appeals, that the audio evidence was recorded on a medium that is not easily accessible. Sound Testimony can work with every analog tape from micro-cassettes and cassettes to all formats (sizes and speeds) of reel-to-reel recordings. If the housing of the enclosed recordings is damaged, we can make repairs before performing high resolution digitization.
You Need Analog Tape Analysis and Digital Conversion When:
- You have a cold-case in which the only recorded audio is on analog audio tape
- You are working on either side of an appeal where the only audio evidence is on analog audio tape
- Sound Testimony® has excellent, high quality, well maintained analog tape machines in a wide variety of formats.
We also provide video of Microscopic Tape Development (Tape Microscopy) if required.
Sound Testimony® provides professional Expert Witness Testimony, when necessary, explaining complex Forensic Audio Procedures and Processes in easy-to-understand language.
You May Need Expert Witness Testimony When:
- You have Forensic Audio evidence that would benefit from a Forensic Audio Expert’s explanation
- Opposing counsel has a Forensic Audio Expert Witness and you need to counter the resulting courtroom testimony
Typically hired by attorneys or law firms, a Forensic Audio Consultant may or may not testify depending on the circumstances of the case.
You Need A Forensic Audio Consultant When:
- The opposing side has hired an Audio Forensics Expert and you need to know what the opposing expert’s report really means
- You want suggestions about how to cross-examine the opposing audio expert on his findings
- Opposing counsel has an Audio Expert and another expert is needed to point out errors in the opposing expert’s findings
- The opposing expert prepared a transcript or enhanced a recording from which a transcript was made and a more thorough enhancement and transcript correction may be necessary
- An additional Forensic Audio Examination is necessary, resulting in a Forensic Report that counters the opposing expert
- Help is needed in preparing questions for the opposing expert
- Any additional preparation of the presentation of the audio evidence is required
Sound Testimony® offers each client the option to have a Forensic Report consisting of what processes were performed on the audio and the Examiner’s findings.
You Need A Forensic Report When:
- You had a Forensic Authenticity Examination performed and the results indicate that the recording was tampered with and/or edited
- You want to submit a recording as evidence and also need a Forensic Report to be entered, indicating that the file has not been altered
- Your attorney tells you that you require a Forensic Report to submit to court or tells you to be prepared to appear in Court with a Forensic Report
Sound Testimony’s Forensic Audio Reports are thorough and comprehensive, covering all processes performed and the resulting findings.
Family and Domestic disputes can be an emotional time for all of the parties involved. If it comes down to he said-she said, and it’s legally recorded, we can help bring clarity to what was really said.
You Need Our Help When:
- You have a legally created recording that “sounds” as if it could be incriminating, but you just can’t quite make out the words
- You receive a recording of you talking but statements you remember making are not on the recording and/or statements on the recording are arranged in a way you don’t remember saying them
- All of Sound Testimony’s Forensic Services can be performed on Family Law recordings as well.
911 Calls are seldom, if ever, made in quiet, calm environments. Often they need Audio Forensic Analysis to determine whether they would benefit from Audio Intelligibility Enhancement to know what was actually said and, if possible, by whom.
You Need Our Help When:
- The 911 Call has too much ambient noise to determine what is being said
- People at the scene of the call are talking among themselves and/or the 911 Operator is talking to units, or the sounds of other 911 Operators talking make the conversation between the caller and the main 911 Operator indistinct and difficult to hear
- Sound Testimony® can improve the audio quality of 911 calls, greatly increasing their clarity.
In the instance of an incorrect transcript, it may be that the first Forensic Audio Examiner did not perform a thorough Audio Intelligibility Enhancement on the recording.
You Need Our Help When:
- What you are reading on a transcript is not what you remember saying or hearing in court, in a deposition, or in any statement that was later transcribed.
- What you hear on the recording doesn’t match what you see on the transcript.
All of Sound Testimony’s® Forensic Services, such as authentication and intelligibility enhancement, can be performed during transcript correction as well.
Sound Testimony® can create Forensic Transcripts. These differ from standard transcripts in that a Forensic Transcript includes references to background noises, pauses, repeated words, e.g., every sound that can be heard on the recording being transcribed.
You Need Our Help When:
- You have reason to believe that more than the foreground voices are possibly evidence
- You want a written record of background conversations, if audible, as well as all sounds on the recording
