Analog Tape Analysis & Recovery

Forensic Tape & Analog Media Services

Unlocking Decades-Old Truths

In cold cases and post-conviction appeals, pivotal evidence is often stored on aging analog media. When the original recording exists solely on physical magnetic tape, conventional playback can risk permanent degradation—or fail to capture critical acoustic nuances altogether. Sound Testimony specializes in forensic recovery, high-resolution digitization, and technical analysis of physical tape formats to uncover facts buried by time.

Supported Analog Formats

Our lab is equipped with calibrated, studio-grade legacy decks and specialized head assemblies to safely handle physical media, including:

✓

Reel-to-Reel Tape

3″ to 10.5″ reels, with support for multiple track and head configurations.

✓

Standard Audio Cassettes

Compact Cassette format, including damaged, warped, or degraded shells and reels.

✓

Micro & Mini-Cassettes

Commonly used in legacy dictation machines, answering machines, and law enforcement recorders.

Our Forensic Tape Recovery Process

From physical inspection to court-ready authentication, every step is designed to preserve the integrity of the original evidence.

High-Resolution Archival Preservation

Physical tape deteriorates through binder breakdown, magnetic bleed-through, and physical warping. Before any processing occurs, we perform structural inspection and, when necessary, physical restoration. We capture the raw audio signal at high-resolution sample rates (up to 24-bit/192kHz) to ensure maximum dynamic range without altering the underlying physical evidence.

Signal Enhancement & Spectral Analysis

Once safely digitized, advanced spectral audio processing isolates quiet background voices, eliminates continuous line hum, reduces tape hiss, and mitigates ambient noise. Details once hidden beneath acoustic degradation become audible and intelligible.

Authentication & Tamper Detection

Analog recordings carry unique physical footprints. Through physical track-width inspection, magnetic strip analysis, and transient signal profiling, we examine tapes for indications of editing, splicing, or over-recording—providing court-ready authentication reports.

A Critical Asset for Legal Teams & Investigators

Whether re-evaluating decade-old police interviews, wiretaps, or room recordings, high-resolution forensic conversion turns overlooked magnetic tape into clear, actionable, and legally admissible evidence. Contact our laboratory to discuss safe physical transport and technical evaluation of your case.
